About SSBR
The Society for the Study of Black Religion is a professional guild of scholars engaged in research and teaching about the religious experiences of the African diaspora. Our membership consists of university, college, and seminary professors, as well as independent scholars, working across a wide range of academic disciplines. The Society was founded in 1969 at a gathering at Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta and our inaugural annual meeting took place the following year in 1970. Since its inception, the organization has facilitated landmark research within the field of Black religious scholarship. We gather annually in different locations across the United States and the Caribbean to advance the study of Black religion, to visit historic sites pertaining to Black life in America, to share groundbreaking work, to foster the study of Black religion in school curricula, and to promote the professional development of new scholars. The mission of the Society extends also to international study tour.
